What exactly is the best way to heat your home? With ever increasing energy costs we are all worried about energy bills and ensuring that our homes are efficient as they can be. This not only saves the environment somewhat but also reduces our monthly outgoings on Gas and Electricity costs.

Air Source Heat Pump or Gas Boiler?

Air Source Heat Pump or Gas Boiler?

Air Source Heat Pump or Gas Boiler?

We will look at the differences between the traditional Gas Boiler and the Air Source Heat Pump to establish what may be best for your situation.

How do gas Boilers operate?

Gas burns with air inside your boiler to produce hot water which can be stored in your hot water tank if you have one. This is usually situated in the loft or upstairs somewhere. Where you have a combi boiler, hot water is produced on demand as needed.

Gas Boilers have benefits:

  • Reliable
  • Easy to replace or install
  • Easy to repair
  • Affordable

What about Heat Pumps?

Heat pumps operate on electricity instead of gas. They take heat from the outside air and compress it to increase the temperature. This heats the water in the hot water tank and around the home.

Heat pumps have some advantages:

  • More energy efficient
  • Lifespan of 20 years or more
  • Lower Carbon Footprint

How does a heat pump replace a Gas Boiler?

There are a couple of steps that need to be taken in order to successfully replace a Gas boiler with a Heat Pump.

Home Survey Check

The free detailed survey happens when we visit your property to check what is required in order to install the new heat pump. These checks may involve inspecting the current pipework, checking the size of the radiators that are installed, finding a suitable location for the heat pump, and ensuring there is adequate insulation to prevent heat loss.

Once our checks are completed, we can offer you our fully documented proposal.

Installation

Installing a Gas Boiler can normally be completed within a day but a heat pump can take a little longer and involve a bit more work. Don’t worry, we will let you how long the works will take when we have completed the survey.

Are heat pumps more environmentally friendly than Gas?

As heat pumps run on electricity, they are more environmentally friendly than gas boilers due to the fact that the UK electricity supply is 50% renewable as of 2024 1st Quarter figures.

Gas Boilers run on natural gas, a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are responsible for around 75% of the global emissions.

How efficient are Heat Pumps vs Gas Boilers?

Most heat pumps have an efficiency rating of around 300% whereas gas boilers are typically 90% efficient therefore heat pumps are several times more efficient than gas boilers.

This means that heat pumps can three units of heat output for every unit of electricity that they consume, this level of efficiency is previously unheard of.

The more efficient your heating system is, the less it will cost to heat your home.
