What is an air source heat pump?
An air source heat pump (ASHPs) moves heat from air outside your home to then heat up the space indoors. The heat energy can be used as a heat source for a number of features in your home. For example, the heat energy can be used to heat radiators, provide hot water and even assist with underfoot heating systems.
Air source heat pumps come with great benefits, as the technology used only requires a small input of electrical energy, you'll find your energy bills are considerably less. If you do install an air source heat pump, you'll be using less non renewable energy in the form of gas. This means your home will be reducing its greenhouse emissions which in turn will help improve air quality.
How does an air source heat pump work?
An air source heat pump works using a few different stages.
- The actual heat pump or box will be installed outside your house. Typically the pumps are no bigger than 2m x 2m and look similar to a fan, this component removes the heat from the air outside.
- As a refrigerant absorbs the heat energy, it changes state from a liquid to a gas. Once the gas is compressed, the temperature of the high pressure gas increases.
- This heat energy is transferred to the water in your existing pipes to warm your home.
- The heated water can be used to heat up underfloor heating systems, radiators and can even be stored in a hot water cylinder.
Which type of air source heat pump should I choose?
At SpartaMech, we have installed two types of air source heat pumps.
The popular air source heat pump is the standard air to water system which we have explained above. The technology is very similar to how a traditional gas boiler might function. The second type of air source heat pump uses an air to air system. The heat energy diverted from outside your home will be circulated inside your property using fans. Air to air heat pump systems are not as efficient as air to water pump systems.
How do I maintain an air source heat pump?
With annual maintenance and regular servicing, an air source heat pump should last you around 20 years. We always advise our customers to take care of air source heat pump systems by removing any debris, leaves or twigs which tend to get caught up in the pump. Ensuring air flow into the pump is not restricted will increase its efficiency and longevity.
