Wall Panels and Tiles

Wall Coverings for Kitchens and Bathrooms can be made in a range of materials. The most commonly used in these areas are those know for their water resistance and durability. Wall Panels are made in a range of either PVC, MDF (medium density fibreboard) that has a waterproof coating, plywood that is coated with a laminate and acrylic. Tiles however are often made from ceramic, porcelain, stone or a composite material. Different materials are suitable to different uses and areas of the home.

Pros and Cons to both Wall Panels and Tiles

Wall Panels – these are often made from materials such as PVC, MDF, plywood or acrylic.

  • Pros: durability, longevity, waterproof, easy to clean, low maintenance, versatile, contemporary. Wall Panels also often tend to take less time to install, there are no grout lines, and no wall preparation is required.
  • Cons: cost, restricted range, possible damage, material degradation, replacement issues.

Tiles – these are often made of materials such as ceramic, porcelain, stone or a composite.

  • Pros: durability, longevity, hard-wearing, easy to clean, low maintenance, water resistant, hypoallergenic, vast range, versatile and ability to mimic other materials. Tiles also offer better air circulation, are environmentally friendly and some can even aid in maintaining the temperature in your home due to thermal conductivity.
  • Cons: cold, slippery surface, grout lines, fragility, cost, maintenance and cleaning.

Aftercare for Wall Panels and Tiles

Aftercare of your Wall Coverings for Kitchens and Bathrooms can vary somewhat depending on the finish you have chosen.
When looking to care for Wall Panels SpartaMech would recommend starting by dusting or hoovering them, then giving them a thorough clean with a soft cloth and warm soapy water and avoid those nasty harsh chemicals. Once clean give them a good rinse off and dry with a soft cloth again.

Should you happen to get a mark or stain on a wall panel act immediately. Do not rub at the stain either this could cause it to further penetrate the wall panel. Again please only use a mild soap and always test in an unnoticeable area first.

Caring for Tiles requires regular cleaning. If you have a tile that is made from a porous material it is also worth considering getting the tiles sealed to avoid any marking or damage from being caused. When cleaning them the same process applies, start by dusting or hoovering them off and then simply use a soft damp cloth with warm soapy water. Please do not use anything with an abrasive action or that contains harsh chemicals. Always rinse and dry too, this step should not be skipped.

Grout lines can be a particular issue with Wall Coverings for Kitchens and Bathrooms and these to require regular cleaning in order to avoid the most common threat that is mould. This occurs due to the damp environments caused by hot showers and steaming pans. Grout cleaners are available, or you can even make your own more natural home cleaning products.
