Switch your heating on in June, July, and August!
That’s right! I mean it. You should absolutely switch your heating on in the summer months for at least 30 minutes once a week or so. This may seem like an absolute crazy thing to do, but let me explain why.
The gas boiler is one of the most essential components in the home heating system and without regular maintenance, it can break down at the most inconvenient times. One of the best things about modern heating systems is that they are incredibly reliable IF they are maintained.
There are many moving parts within a heating system and perhaps the most important are the diverter valves that switch from hot water to radiator heating. When these valves break or become stuck, they will prevent you from having hot water or heating and will require an engineer to attend to fix the problem safely.
If you turn your heating off in April and don’t turn it back on again until October then you are likely to have a problem with the diverter valves. Without regular operation, these valves can become stuck in place meaning that the heating may not come on. This means that an engineer will need to attend to replace the valves and any associated components that have not been used for months!
By turning your heating on occasionally throughout the summer months, it will help prevent components like this from becoming jammed and causing heating failure when you need it most. The other reason for using the heating throughout the summer for brief periods is that you are able to ascertain if there are any problems with the heating system early on. Once the winter starts Gas and Heating Engineers are incredibly busy, the supply chain for spare parts becomes strained and it may be difficult to fix your boiler quickly!
As your local HEATING ENGINEERS IN HEREFORD, we regularly come across boiler failure at the start of the colder season that could have been prevented by simply switching the heating on a few times throughout the summer. Whilst Gas is expensive these days, it is far cheaper to run the heating occasionally than have an emergency callout and replacement parts fitted.
Boiler Servicing
The other obvious way of preventing breakdowns is to have your boiler serviced regularly. This should be common sense to most of us as we would not run our cars without changing the oil when required but boilers become forgotten so long as they appear to be working well.
A regular boiler service will allow your engineer to check the exhaust gases are correct, inspect the visual condition of the insides of the boiler and keep you abreast of any parts that may need replacing soon or dangerous situations.
With regular servicing, maintenance and care your boiler will live the longest life possible before needing replacement and the risk of breakdowns is minimised.
