How can I save money heating my home?
There are a few different changes you can make – some are small, others are more of an investment. Let’s look at how you can lower your heating costs…
A new boiler: I’ll start with the big one! Although this might not be possible for everyone, a new boiler can drastically lower your heating costs. Newer boilers are made with energy efficiency in mind which in turn can make heating your home quicker. Newer boilers can help to reduce carbon emissions, are smaller in size and generally perform better across the board. You can also opt for a smart boiler with digital programming which allows you utilise something called ‘multi-zone’ heating. This allows you to heat different areas of your home at certain times.
Central heating flushing: Also known as ‘power flushing’ – flushing your central heating system is essentially emptying the system fully and giving the inside a good old’ clean. It’s a form of maintenance and is recommended around every five years. If you notice your radiators are cold but your pipes are hot, or your radiators are taking a long time to get hot it might be worth considering a power flush. Other telling signs include knocking and banging noises, bleeding constantly needed and leaky radiators. Power flushing can also increase your boilers lifespan so it’s a worthwhile form of maintenance!
Heating your home mindfully: You can even lower your heating cots simply by making a few mindful changes to your heating habits. Try lowering your thermostat down by one degree. You might be thinking one degree won’t make a difference, but it’s thought by experts that turning your thermostat down just by one degree can actually save you around 10% on your yearly heating costs! You should also only be heating the rooms you are using and ensure your home is sufficiently insulated.
